I was captivated by the delicacy with which the difficult story was handled without for one minute losing the realism.The story is gripping.I identified closely with Loveday.The twists and turns of the plot were delicious! Particularly in the final parts I found myself saying - What?!! - very often.The only little disappointment was the end. Well done!
This was an enchanting book. Written with a love and understanding of human nature..I loved every word, and could hardly put it down.No crime, no violence no bad language, so refreshing!!If you like a gentle love story without all the sugary nonsense, you will enjoy this book!!
An incredibly readable novel about a troubled young woman learning to make her way in the world while working in a quirky bookshop with a delightful owner. We meet wonderful and authentic characters: some of whom are able to draw our heroine out and allow her to discover courage she never knew she had. We also meet less pleasant characters as heroine finds out about and comes to terms with herself and her past.
This book is definitely for people who enjoyed Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. It is in a similar vein and is the story of a young girl who grew up in the care system as a result of domestic violence. It explores the effects of her upbringing and how she manages to cope as an adult, often crawling into the world of books, who are her best friends and a way of escaping the real world. With the help of peopel who love her she slowly learns to adapt to the real world and accept love. A very enjoyable book.
Loveday, the main character, has a lovely life in Whitby by the sea with her loving parents...until she doesn't. Her life is torn apart at ten, and she is unable to move forward from that time. She shuts herself off and makes a life for herself amid books, both reading and working in a used bookshop in York. She fully trusts no one, including herself. With the help of Archie, who hires her at just 15, part-time, and full time once she turns 18, she eventually learns that she can be both loved and accepted on her own terms. There are some pitfalls along the way, and readers may find some tears, some smiles, and some respect for her emergence as the person she would like to be. This is filled with good characters, the portly Archie with an amazing past, Rob who has more problems than she, Nathan she learns to trust, and a reunion with her troubling past. With the backdrop of a bookstore all readers would love to visit and stay awhile, this is quite a heartfelt contemporary drama Ms. Butland creates. I do recommend it.
Loveday works in a used bookstore with a somewhat eccentric owner who has become a father figure. She’s content to spend her days in anonymity, introverting as she goes through piles of donated books. When books from her childhood, the EXACT books, suddenly begin showing up in boxes, Loveday is forced to face her past, in order to pursue her future.This book has well-fleshed our characters. I also like how we get glimpses into Loveday’s past instead of having the whole story at once. Highly recommend, especially if you love books. There are some references to premarital sex here and there, but it’s all very clinical. Recommended for ages 15 and up.
I fell deeply in love with Loveday - as someone I wanted to mother and protect - I loved Archie for doing so and I knew Annabelle was a hidden gem in her life. Nathan enchanted me and Rob repulsed me. Conflicted But angry with Dad and pity for Mom. Quirky and inspirational - I wanted to meet Loveday in her shop and see what she recommends for me to read next. She spoke to me when she spoke to her dear reader - I answered her and smiled. Beguiling, entertaining and thoughtfully written.
I fell in love with Loveday and her very select and colourful friends. I found that I had to make myself read slower - just so I could make the book last longer. (I failed, by the way). Loveday comes across as a tough nut that has had an enormous burden to carry. But actually she has a moralistic and caring soul. But apart from this, I was captivated with the story and found myself cackling out loud and then crying. Would highly recommend this book.
