You don't need to read more than the sample to realize how cheesy this book is going to be. Even if you get past the premise (which is a good, hot idea but never really gets off the ground) the heroine's idiocy will drive you crazy. I'm all for steamy romance novels, but I felt like a lot of the word choices used in the sex scenes were not hot at all, but incredibly vulgar. Ever hear of a flower euphemism? About 80% into the book, the sci fi plot actually gets interesting, but it feels rushed. Oh well, what did I really expect?
Not the worst book I've ever read but definitely in the top 2. This isn't exactly an erotic novel. Lots of heavy petting and little else until the end. For a Not Erotic Novel it lacked plot, logical conflict and action. I felt like the author should have picked one or the other. The fence sitting on which genre made for a boring read. The main characters aren't engaging and the female protagonist comes off as insipid, immature and weak. A complete lack of forethought and imagination on a 2D world that could have been 4D if the author had just spent a little more time and effort.
Olivia and her sister...made me want to kill them more than the scourge. It's too bad that the story was so badly written, because it has the potential to be a lot better. Maybe the author didn't have an editor...Olivia and Baird's chemistry wasn't too bad, but the amount of time the writer spent on Olivia's excuses and complaining was unbelievable. And then right at the end, she does a 180 and finally lets Baird bond with her. Sheesh.
I found myself skipping through this book because I was so bored listening to the same thing being repeated over and over and over and over... it was simply maddening I don't think I could take one more whining moment of this book. I don't want to stay here I want to go back home to live with my sister. And don't want to stay here I want to stay with my sister I think I've made my point and if I haven't read this 10 times over and you'll start to get an inkling of what this book is
First, the cons: This is the first full-length work I've read by this author, and it seems like she's created a universe she and her loyal readers know well, so maybe that's why I had a hard time understanding some of the mechanics of the lottery. Supposedly, every youngish, unmarried woman on Earth is put into a lottery to be matched up with an alien male, in return for the alien's protection against another race of hostile aliens. I get that, but the H and h have dreams about each other before they meet--he even goes to her house--and she conveniently gets matched up with the man of her dreams. So, is this lottery rigged? Also, there is no criteria given for how the alien male is chosen as a recipient for a human female. The H just got out of a harrowing situation, and you'd think he'd want to take a breather and get back into the swing of things, not jump right into a possible permanent relationship. There is a scene on the alien ship, where our h (who sometimes is TSTL---who doesn't read a contract that lays out the possibility that you'll be married to an alien in a month?) wanders into the single male section and is accosted. It is strongly suggested that one of the males is willing to rape her to make her his, but all of these Kindred aliens are supposed to value women sooooo much, because they're so rare. I can see them fighting among themselves, but that seemed out of character to me.Finally, the word 'lied.' Yes, the whole 'lay/lie' grammar thing can get a little tricky, and, nowadays, people don't even seem to care that 'chickens lay, people lie.' But twice this authors writes the phrase, '...he lied down on the bed.' C'mon! Just read that phrase out loud, and you'll know it's wrong. "Laid' is the past tense of 'lie,' as in 'lie down.' 'Lied' is the past tense of 'lie,' as in 'I lied to you.' Maybe the author just second-guessed herself into the wrong word choice, because the rest of the book was pretty cleanly edited. Now, for the good--There are some interesting concepts and nice, little touches to illustrate that this is an alien culture. Some of them were a little silly--why the heck does the massage mat have a setting that's too scary for even the aliens to use?--but fun overall. The pacing was good, and who wouldn't be attracted to the H. It was all a little over-the-top, but it was entertaining and kept my interest throughout.Definitely recommend
This is my second try reading this author. The first book was terrible, but I pushed through for book club. Here, a year later, they're reading another one and I just couldn't do it. This reads like cheap "bow chicka bow wow" porn. Example: of course she answers the door in her tiny black nightie, and of course Mr Man is hung like a horse. Insert eye roll here. The story just gets more cliche from there, rolling downhill with her nagging, whining or yelling. There's nothing "alpha" or scary about this man. I mean, he's annoyingly stubborn but in the "nice guy" way when dealing with childish temper tantrums. The story in the background is weak in premise, completely lacking. I've read freshman creative writing papers with better dialogue. Overall, terrible book. I stopped reading everything at 15% and started skimming. Only reason someone might enjoy this is for the overly abundant and detailed sex scenes (without much really happening), if the reader was looking for simple fast easy reader book porn. (And that's ok if that's your thing, you'll love this! It's just not mine. I like stronger characters, more story. For me, loads of sex drama doesn't make a below average book better.)
This story has romance, intrigue, adventure, and some angst. You can almost feel the sexual frustration with this couple. I could barely put it down. If I really did not have to go to sleep, I would have finished it in one sitting. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I admire the writer's talent for delivering a smooth and exciting story that has me wanting more.
