I haven't finished it yet but so far have really enjoyed the read. It's pretty easy to follow and speaks to Gods grace being more available to us than some of the church has made it sound. We've come to give the shame of our sin more power than the gospel of grace. Beautiful words.
MY SISTER GAVE ME THIS BOOK TO READ... HOWEVER, SHE HAD UNDERLINED MEANINGFUL PARTS, SO, BECAUSE I FOUND THAT DISTRACTING, AND I REALLY LIKED THE BOOK, I PURCHASED A COPY FOR MYSELF, SO THAT I COULD UNDERLINE WHAT WAS MEANINGFUL YO ME, AND KEEP IT AS A REFERENCE. NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE GREW UP IN A SHAME-BASED CULTURE, SO WE REALLY STRUGGLE W/ AN ABUNDANCE OF UNDESERVED GUILT. I FOUND THE BOOK VERY INSIGHTFUL AND HELPFUL... A MUST READ FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO FIND YOURSELF IN THE FUNK OF NOT UNDERSTANDING WHERE YOUR BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF COMES FROM. GRACE IS THE MOST VALUABLE THING WE CAN GIVE OURSELVES AND EXTEND TO OTHERS.
I read everything I can on the effect of sin called shame and its attending affect. If you are a Christian this is the best work I've read on it. Period. Smedes is a brilliant scholar who has been freed to write to the rest of us. Thank God for that. His brilliance is this case helps us to see sin damage in a new light and that God doesn't only absolve my guilt, but he heals me from the side effects too! Sin, guilt and shame are heavy. God lifts the burden for free, just because he loves us. It's called grace.
This book was amazing. Ive been on a journey understanding my own unhealthy shame due to a traumatic past and this book help so much. Its not heavily saturated with scriptures (which Im not offended by because I know my Bible) although he writes through the lens of the Bible. I found it refreshing. Thank you Dr. Lewis

It's great to distinguish between those negative emotions and to dispel the lies and recover from the pain. Great book.
It is an excellent book to read and to reflect on your life...
This book when read gives encouragement to those who can't forgive themselves. After all if God forgives us through His Son, Jesus Christ - we surely must recognize that we cannot take God's place and therefore cannot hold on to guilt.
