I was getting ready for a trip to Amsterdam and wanted to study up a bit on its history. I loved this book! Well written, engaging, and very interesting. The author gives a lot of interesting details about the buildings and the history of them. In fact, I read it twice and took it with me to Amsterdam and visited many of the places he mentioned. I even happened upon some locals and explained a little bit of their history to them! I did receive one interesting comment from a dutch man who recognized the book. He said he had read it and really appreciated the positive view that the gives of Amsterdam's history. The dutch man said, "those of us from here feel a little less positive about our past". Just thought that was interesting. Would absolutely recommend this book!
THIS is an incredible book! I found it first on a cruise ship in the well-stocked library and was returning at journeys end to Amsterdam. I was able to pinpoint many of the historical facts he brought up once I was back in the Netherlands. You think you know what this country is like...all about...not a chance! So much history packed into this great book, first-hand tales, lively research, great story-telling. I finished it in 2 days. I have already recommended it to my friends. If you want to know more about the Dutch and the unique and lasting way they have impacted global society - read this book. Soooo good!
This book links historical basis for a tolerant (liberal) and free society already in the 1500's with how the Western world evolved.Amsterdam and most of the Netherlands became the most progressive society in the world for about a century. It is well written, with stories and time, interspersed with historical event of significance. This affected the whole world and largely formed the basis of the US constitution. Russell has made very good connections of governance, tolerance, religious and economic freedom to paint a picture of a very small, but significant trading country. I would certainly recommend it to historical buffs and those who want to understand how Europe and the US evolved from the 1500's on.
A fascinating and provocative way to tell the history of an important and influential city. Non-linear in the best sort of way, this book covers the bits and pieces and sweeping presence of Amsterdam. I bought this book mostly because I am about to pay my second visit to Amsterdam and it just seemed so appropriate when I saw it advertised. It's easy to read, yes, but well written in a first-person account of an American's adoption of Amsterdam as his new home town. Very compelling and thought provoking, and written with love, tenderness and a discerning eye.
Quite a good read for a history book and certainly engaging. Liberalism and tolerance as a background for the history of Amsterdam provides a good context to relate these events to present day concepts to much of what we take for granted. Perhaps out of deference to his adopted city, he avoids much of the controversial issues of Dutch colonialism in the more modern day context. The latter chapters providing a cursory reconciliation and enlightenment on the global legacy of Dutch colonialism. A topic for others to cover.
Terrific series of historic stories woven into a narrative of how Amsterdam can be viewed as a harbinger of liberalism in the Western world. Shorto invites one to truly experience what individuals did in each period, all the while providing enough historic backdrop to provide a movement through history.I was thoroughly entertained. His thesis concerning liberalism works in most ways, until modern times and then falls a bit. The Dutch did express the best of tolerance in the age of Mercantilism, but Mercantilism in itself is liberally problematic.It is almost as if all the bits and pieces he couldn’t fit into his masterpiece Island at the Center of the World went into this book. I’m glad to have read both volumes.
Everyone should read this book. I am Dutch, born and raised, learned a lot in history class but this book gives a more human view on the history of Amsterdam and the influence Amsterdam and the Dutch have on the world. I have so much more appreciation for my own country.
Interesting and greatly detailed, this book helped me understand the modern culture of Amsterdam. Not a casual throwaway read, this delves into how the church. royalty, the tulip, art, farmers, burghers, invading armies, and natural climate all impacted the county and how that impact shaped the city of today, I read this while in Amsterdam so that made it more real, i.e. being able to walk to the location of the world's first stock exchange (on a bridge!).
