Gr 7 Up-It was just a normal day on the human colony world Meridian. Saskia is yet again abandoned at home by her parents' top secret assignments from the United Nations Space Command (UNSC). Evie and Victor are arguing about the film they are creating, and holo-film star Dorian is on a boat about to play a gig with his band. Without warning, the Covenant attacks, and the town's survivors are ushered into shelters. Saskia, Dorian, Evie, and Victor find themselves in the middle of a battleground with few weapons. Luckily, they run into an injured Spartan who begrudgingly assists them in fighting the Covenant to save their town. This harrowing adventure is told in alternating viewpoints. The teen protagonists discover why the Covenant has attacked and must open the shelter and leave Meridian before their planet is demolished. Fans of the Halo video game franchise will recognize many concepts and creatures in this volume, such as Sangheili, Unggoy, Needler, and Glassing. However, Clarke offers just enough background information for readers unfamiliar with the "Halo" series to enjoy the story and be excited for the next installment. Cassandra Rose Clarke's work has been nominated for the Philip K. Dick Award, the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, the Pushcart Prize, and YALSA's Best Fiction for Young Adults. She grew up in south Texas and currently lives in a suburb of Houston, where she writes and serves as the associate director for Writespace, a literary arts nonprofit. She holds an MA in creative writing from the University of Texas at Austin, and in 2010 she attended the Clarion West Writer's Workshop in Seattle. I've been reading Halo literature since they first released it and this is a good addition to the lore. I breezed it pretty quickly so it's a bit easier to read than most novels in Halo. Definitely eager for the next installment.
I like reading books in the Halo universe about citizens in normal lives, who are thrust into war randomly. It's exciting to see how characters react in times of great peril, and how they adapt to their environment.If you compare this to the other 'young citizens of Halo' book that is Legacy of Onyx, the writing of the younger characters feels more genuine here, but there is a lot more alien action, directly, and more of that perspective in the Onyx book.Here you mostly have character introductions, running about, and a few direct skirmishes, but nothing from the perspective of aliens, but instead directly from the characters of Saskia, Evie, Victor, and Dorien. Each chapter is from a different perspective and then switches back. I found Saskia's the most entertaining.
I think that it was a short novel but overall a good story
Always nice to hear stories from the “normal†folks, just like “Last Light†had done. The friendships formed over the course makes me interested to see a sequel!
Really cliched and didn’t feel integrated into the Halo universe.
When their coastal town is attacked by an alien enemy organization known as the Covenant, four teens learn what they are capable of and what they are willing to do for the people they love.High school students Evelyn Rousseau, Victor Gallardo, Saskia Nazari, and Dorian Nguyen didn’t make it to the town’s shelters before the doors closed. Luckily, Saskia’s house is a veritable fortress filled with prototype weapons from her parents’ jobs as defense system manufacturers. The teens, who were not close prior to this disaster, have to learn to work together as a team. During surveillance they cross paths with a Spartan, a supersoldier who fights with the United Nations Space Command, named Owen-B096. They are trained by Owen and learn that the aliens are digging up an artifact in their town. The team sabotages the drilling and forms a plan to safely get themselves and the survivors of their village of Brume-sur-Mer off their planet, Meridian. But will everything go according to plan? Clarke brings the popular video game “Halo†to life with likable characters and a suspenseful, fast-paced plot. While the characters are somewhat two-dimensional, the nonstop action will draw in readers. Knowledge of the game makes the plot and terminology easier to follow. Diversity is implied through names.A series opener that will find readers wherever the video game is popular.
The story is good. A bit of Red Dawn in the Halo universe fits in well. It's nice to see younger heroes appearing in these novels. The characters and motivations are flushed out nicely with a clever cliffhanger at the end. The one issue I had was with the narrator's use of a breathy whisper style of speaking for anything that wasn't dialogue. It was off-putting and a strange choice for a novel whose plot is a mix of action and interpersonal drama. Listen to the sample and if it bugs you like it did me go for the print version
Very well written, and can't wait to read the sequel
